Unlocking Inner Wisdom: The Power of Muscle Testing
At IAM Coaching™, we help individuals reconnect with their authentic selves and align their careers with their life purpose. One of the unique tools we use in our sessions is muscle testing, a powerful and non-invasive method to access the subconscious mind. Although it may seem simple, muscle testing taps into the body’s innate intelligence and has been used for decades in holistic and alternative healing practices.
What is Muscle Testing? Muscle testing, also known as applied kinesiology, is a technique that involves monitoring the body’s muscular response to specific stimuli, questions, or statements. The principle behind muscle testing is that the body experiences subtle changes in muscle strength depending on whether it perceives information as true, false, safe, or stressful. These muscle responses provide a direct line of communication with the subconscious mind, where emotional blocks, limiting beliefs, and unresolved experiences reside.
How We Use It at IAM Coaching™ In our coaching sessions, we use muscle testing as part of the MAP (Make Anything Possible) Method™. This approach helps identify and gently neutralize subconscious blocks that prevent clients from reaching their full potential. Whether we are working on career clarity, overcoming fear, or shifting limiting beliefs, muscle testing allows us to:
Bypass the analytical mind and access deeper truths
Validate the subconscious readiness for change
Track emotional shifts and progress over time
Clients often describe the experience as surprising, enlightening, and even liberating. It serves as a way to build self-trust and heighten body awareness, both essential in any healing or transformational journey.
Scientific Support and Context While muscle testing originated in chiropractic care and holistic medicine, emerging fields in neuroscience and psychophysiology support the underlying principles:
Psychophysiological Response: Research shows that the body responds to stress and emotion through subtle muscular and autonomic changes (Monti et al., 1999).
Neuroplasticity and Belief Systems: Studies in neuroscience suggest that subconscious beliefs influence behavior and physiology (Lipton, 2005; Pert, 1997).
Somatic Psychology: As described by van der Kolk (2014), the body stores emotional memory, and somatic responses can be used therapeutically to access and release stored trauma.
Despite mixed reviews in clinical studies, the practical outcomes reported by clients and practitioners alike make muscle testing a compelling tool for personal development and holistic coaching.
How It Works in Practice There are different muscle testing techniques, and we often teach clients to try simple methods themselves:
The Sway Test: Standing upright, the body will naturally sway forward for "yes" responses and backward for "no" responses.
The Finger Ring Test: Using two fingers to form a ring and testing its strength when making a statement.
Client Reactions and Experiences Many clients are initially curious or skeptical, but once they experience it, they often describe muscle testing as:
A way to connect with their inner truth
An empowering self-awareness tool
A surprising path to clarity and confidence
Muscle testing is more than a technique—it's a bridge to your inner wisdom. At IAM Coaching™, we integrate this approach into our MAP Method™ based sessions to create lasting and meaningful change. By honoring the intelligence of the body, we help you release what no longer serves you and step into your purpose with clarity and alignment.
